Lee sat in this father's quarters "Dad, do you know what today is?"
Adama looked up at his son. He removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes. "You're going to have to help me here, son."
Adama tossed his glasses on his desk. "Frak, I forgot."
"She told me she doesn't want a party."
Adama knew that look on his son's face. "How about dinner? Do you think you can get her here?
"Come on, Kara."
"No way, Lee. I told you no parties."
"Who said anything about a party? It's dinner."
Kara thought about it. "With you and the old man." She said as she slammed her locker shut. "Okay, Dinner but nothing else."
"I can't promise that." Lee replied. He turned around in the doorway. Wear something nice, it's your day and we're family." He smiled and left.
Lee arrived early to help his father. "She's coming but she said no presents or cake."
"What's a birthday without presents?" Adama asked as he put the plates on the table. Light the candles will you?"
"I told her I couldn't promise anything."
"What did you get her?"
His father stood staring at him. "It's no secret you two have been seeing each other.
"I might have something up my sleeve." Lee admitted with a slight blush. "If the commander approves." Lee pulled a small box from his pocket and handed it over to his father, who opened it.
He smiled and then closed the box. He handed it back to Lee and smiled. "Of course, I approve. I'm glad you finally got up the courage to ask."
Kara dressed in a black sweater and a pair of dress pants. She didn't often dress like this but Lee was right this was her day. She could do whatever the frak she wanted. She put on a little makeup, including lipstick and then made her way to dinner.
Adama greeted her with a hug and kiss when she arrived. "Happy Birthday, Kara."
"Thanks, you two didn't have to do all of this." She said as Lee came up to her and gave her a kiss.
"Yes, we did." Lee said as he escorted her to the table. "You're family."
The meal was the best present she could have asked for. They spent most of the night reminiscing and laughing.
"Keep your fork, Kara. We have a surprise for you." Lee picked up her dish and disappeared.
Adama sat and talked with her until Lee returned with the surprise.
"What you smiling at old man?"
"You, you look beautiful Kara. I hope you're enjoying yourself."
"I am. I'm with my family. I told Lee no parties. It looks like I lost."
Adama laughed. "Yeah, you did, Kara."
When Lee returned to the table he placed a cake decorated with a red rose in front of Kara. She looked closely at the cake. She saw something sparkling in the rose. Her hand flew over her mouth and tears formed in her eyes.
Lee reached for the ring and sank to one knee. It took all of his courage to stay together but he'd never been so sure of anything in his life.
